Changing Lives Through Construction: Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Comes to Knoxville, Part 1

It’s hard to believe that it’s been over two years since I was honored to be a part of a very special group of volunteers who came together to help a Knoxville family achieve a dream come true.

On most days, you will find my company, Leon Williams Contractors, involved in commercial construction throughout East Tennessee. But when I was asked to join the more than 4,000-member crew who volunteered to help build a new home for the Watson family, during the filming of a special episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” I jumped at the chance.

Daniel and Mandy Watson have three adopted children of their own, and also run The Restoration House, through which they provide low-income, single mothers with a place to stay and the tools to get on their feet. Their home at the time had a crumbling foundation, warped floors, cracked walls, and sagging ceilings. There wasn’t much insulation and there was a lot of moisture accumulation, and part of the roof had been covered with a tarp for two years.

The Watsons applied for the show and were selected as the first family from Knoxville to appear on “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” which aired on ABC in November 2012.

Being part of the “Extreme Home Makeover” experience was a-once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, and I wanted to share our photos and videos of the experience.

Let’s start with a look at where the Watsons began.

It was a whirlwind of a week. Be sure to watch this blog for more of my pictures from the project.
